Raven is one of our dedicated players and Tavern volunteers. Also known as Guildmaster Nightshade, Raven runs the "Rogue's Game" in the Tavern, is the source of the name for this year's +2 Short Sword, and has the reputation of having one of the most accurate slides in all TD.
1) Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself.
I am, in no particular order, a: Canadian, internet junkie, gamer,
LARPer, corvidophile, Registered Nurse, goth, Christian, parent of 3
kids with varying special needs, caffeine addict, and vaguely competent
with a sword.
2) How did you first hear about True Dungeon?
My significant other said, "Let's go to GenCon this year!" and I said,
"Why? Is there anything interesting going on there that we can't do at
home?"
But for kicks, I looked at the GenCon web page, and I saw something
about a new event called 'True Dungeon'. It seemed interesting enough
for me to agree to spend our vacation savings on a weekend of gaming in
the States.
And it was worth every penny, of course.
3) What is your current involvement with True Dungeon, and how did you get there?
I help with as much of the set up/take down as I can (without spoiling
the surprise of the adventure, of course, which means I do very little
set up, and an awful lot of take-down) and I volunteer in the tavern.
The most fun part of that is running the Rogues' Game every evening.
I got into volunteering by playing back in 2004 and being completely
unable to tear myself away when it was done. So I helped with take-down
and got to meet all the cool people behind the scenes. I knew I had to
come back and do it again.
4) What is your fondest True Dungeon memory?
I can't pick one favorite. Near the top, though are: The Rogues' tunnel
from TD's first year; That first step into the 3D room for Gearon's
Puzzle; The sight of a blue hand emerging from a fountain and giving us
the thumbs-up; Sitting in the tavern during TD's 2nd year and enjoying
the ambience; Waking up at 4am the night after my very first TD run
because my mind had just solved one of the puzzles in my sleep, and I
knew I *had* to go back and play the game again; Sitting in a crowd of
TD volunteers in the wee hours of the morning after take-down, when
everyone is completely exhausted, and knowing we'd all participated in
one of the most kick-ass events ever.
5) Why do you think True Dungeon has been so successful? Will it last?
Why? Because it's an incredibly immersive experience. When you come out
of a good TD run, you don't feel like you just played a good game - you
feel like you just emerged from an adventure. And those people you
played with? They aren't a bunch of strangers anymore - they're a group
of friends who risked their lives for you when when the going got
tough, and who had your back, and trusted you to watch theirs, and who
shared ideas and jokes and treasure and some of the best hours of your
life with you. That's what really makes TD - the shared experience.
It's fantastic.
Will it last? As long as Jeff wants it to, and as long as GenCon is
willing to keep sponsoring it. So, probably not forever, but hopefully
for many more excellent years.
6) If you had the power to instantly make one change to True Dungeon, what would it be and why?
I would give Jeff a hundred willing minions to do his bidding, so he
doesn't have to worry about burning out his friends & core volunteers,
or take so much time away from his family to run True Dungeon.
7) What do you see in True Dungeon's future?
More cool tokens?
8) What are your non-gaming-related interests?
Reading, bird watching, photography, medieval costuming, swordplay,
camping, hiking, swimming, Autism, web page design, and drinking
coffee.
