Smakdown is a Tavern volunteer, with a strong penchant for collecting tokens. Well known by all board-folk, it was humorously suggested that the largest of the token order options should be called a "Smakload" in his honor.
1) Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is jeff cunningham. I go by "smakdown" on the TD forum. I was born in the midwest and raised on military bases all over the world. I started playing D&D in high school and thought it was the greatest game ever. It seemed to go well with my overactive imagination. I settled down in my hometown and met friends who were like minded in the game catagory.
Like everyone, as I got older my interests grew. I got into collecting firearms for a while. Then I got into racing cars. Fireworks are a big thing for me as well. I love to see things go BANG.
As of this writing, I am single and no children. I am hoping to do someting about the marriage thing soon.
2) How did you first hear about True Dungeon?
A few years ago a friend of mine started attending gencon. He tried to get me to go, but to no avail. When I finally agreed to go, he said that TD was "THE EVENT" and we had to do it. That was in 2005 Indy.
3) What is your current involvement with True Dungeon, and how did you get there?
2007 Indy will be my second year as a volunteer. My first dip into TD was buying tokens. I bought a "few". Then I heard about the gold ticket runs, and bought more for my friends and I. Then I decided after Indy, to start collecting tokens and bought more. All that took place in 2005. In 2006, I purchased what was probably the largest token order to date. Does intervention come to anyones mind? I love collecting tokens. This year I placed another large order for tokens. This is just my way of showing support for a great event and having a good time.
My most notable tie to TD would have to be.....I'm a charter member of tokenholics anonymous.
4) What is your fondest True Dungeon memory?
There are so many fond memories, I can't pick just one. The adrenaline rush of watching a guy go out on a stretcher, getting Lee Vaughn to autograph a token, helping with set-up and tear-down, my friend claiming to draw a "maul of the titans" from his bag, finding my first ultra-rare, Tom handing me a "Ring of the Bad Ass". Where do I start? I have to say it would be the new friends I have made and being able to hang out with some great people, even for just a brief time. The people make TD the super event that it is.
5) Why do you think True Dungeon has been so successful? Will it last?
The success of TD can be directly attributed to a ton of hard work and vision by Jeff and the directors. This is by no means a slight towards the endless hours worked by volunteers. The event is hands on. It's like a movie, only better because you get to interact with the enviroment.
The theme changes and adapts from year to year. The props and set improve yearly. The staff are dedicated to the event. People have a genuine desire to escape from reality and TD provides that escape. That is why TD will continue.
6) If you had the power to instantly make one change to True Dungeon, what would it be and why?
What would I change about TD? I really do not know. I would love to be able to buy complete sets of tokens (addict here), but that isn't really changing TD. I would like to see an ability to "reserve" or buy in advance tickets for it. My net connection is horrible and it would help me get the times that fit my friends and I. That would be Gencon though.
7) What do you see in True Dungeon's future?
My perception of TD's future is kind of scary. I can see this as an event that can explode and maybe do smaller convention. Obviously they would be on a smaller scale. I can see it continuing to grow and flourish and perhaps becoming more space/time involving at Gencon itself. The props just get better along with the sets every year.
8) What are your non-gaming-related interests?
Answered in first part.
